How The Cambridge STEM SMART Programme Helps State-School Students

Cambridge STEM Smart

If you’re studying maths or science A-levels, you’ll know how tough it can be to stay on top of everything — especially when you’re also thinking about university applications. Some schools have endless resources, while others barely have time to get through the syllabus.

That’s where Cambridge STEM SMART comes in.

It’s a free, 16-month programme run by the University of Cambridge to help state-school students boost their grades, build confidence, and get ready for STEM degrees.

So, What Exactly Is STEM SMART?

STEM SMART (which stands for Subject Mastery and Attainment Raising Tuition) is all about giving students extra support in subjects like maths, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. It’s open to anyone in a UK state school who’s taking maths plus at least one science or computing subject at A-level.

You don’t have to be applying to Cambridge — plenty of people who take part end up going to other unis. The goal is to help more students from all backgrounds reach their potential in STEM.

How It Works

The programme starts in January of Year 12 and runs right through to May of Year 13, split into three stages:

  • Phase 1 (Jan–July, Year 12): Weekly online tutorials led by Cambridge academics. You get set tasks that line up with your A-level topics, plus mentoring from current Cambridge students who’ve been through it all themselves.
  • Phase 2 (Sept–Dec, Year 13): The work gets a bit more focused with smaller tutorials and help on things like personal statements. Some students are invited to a four-day residential at Cambridge — a proper chance to see what university life’s like.
  • Phase 3 (Jan–May, Year 13): It’s all about exam prep and revision, helping you feel confident going into your final exams.

It’s a decent commitment (a few hours a week), but the structure makes it manageable alongside schoolwork — and most people say it’s well worth it.

Why It Makes a Difference

GCSE Results

An independent UCAS study found that students who took part in Cambridge STEM SMART ended up achieving, on average, a whole grade higher in A-level maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, and biology compared to similar students who didn’t join the programme.

They were also:

  • Twice as likely to get an A* in maths
  • Four times as likely to get an A* in physics
  • Twice as likely to get into Oxbridge

Those are massive results for something that doesn’t cost a penny. It’s a good reminder that with the right support, hard work really can go further.

Who It’s For

The programme is mainly for state-school students who’ve shown academic potential but might not have had the same opportunities as others — maybe your school doesn’t have a big STEM department, or you’re the first in your family to aim for uni.

You’ll need to be studying A-level maths plus at least one other science or computer science subject, and you should be thinking about a STEM degree — anything from engineering to physics, biology, or computing.

What Students Say

Cambridge STEM Smart Certificate

Lots of students describe STEM SMART as a proper confidence boost. The mentoring side makes a big difference — talking to Cambridge undergrads who know exactly what it’s like to juggle A-levels and uni plans helps make the process feel less intimidating.

The residential is another highlight. Spending a few days in Cambridge, going to tutorials and exploring the colleges, can completely change how you see top universities. It’s less “out of reach” and more “I can actually do this.”

How To Apply

Applications open in the autumn term of Year 12, and the programme kicks off in January. The process is simple — you fill in an online form and your school may need to confirm a few details.

You can find everything you need to know on the University of Cambridge website — just search “Cambridge STEM SMART” and it’ll come straight up.

Why It’s Worth It

At its core, Cambridge STEM SMART is about fairness. It’s not about giving anyone special treatment — it’s about making sure smart, hardworking students get the same shot at success no matter where they go to school.

If you love maths or science and you’re serious about doing well, it’s one of the best opportunities out there. Free support from Cambridge academics, mentoring from current students, and a real chance to stretch yourself — it’s hard to say no to that.
