Is it even worth me reading this page?
Well that depends. To be brief, we launched in October 2010. In 2011, we were voted the 25th best group blog in the UK in the Total Politics Blog Awards and were also named the Runner-Up in the category of Website of the Year at the Guardian Student Media Awards.
FAQS
1. Why did you set up The Student Journals?
There are three main reasons why TSJ exists:
1. We (a group of university students) felt that university students do not have an outlet from which to express their opinions on a national level.
2. We realised that students did not have opportunities to get involved in journalism at a higher level (while getting noticed by national media).
3. We wanted to develop the style of budding journalists and allow them to achieve their potential.
Thus, through TSJ, hopefully this is all now possible.
2. So you mean anybody can write on TSJ?
That's the plan. Any UK university student (and sabbatical officer) can submit an article on TSJ. To ensure we have well-written, cogent and interesting articles, all articles will go through a moderation & editing process. Once cleared, articles will appear on the site. Look at question 8 if you're not a student in the UK.
3. So if I'm not a student, I can't write?
Unfortunately, that's exactly right. However, if you haven't got a full-time, paid job since your graduation, then we're more than happy to accept your articles.
4. What opportunities are there for me if I write for TSJ?
There are a multitude of opportunities within your grasp. Firstly, the more you write, the more well-known you become as a student journalist and national papers may ask you to write an article for them. You will also have the chance to convince others to agree with your opinion.
Moreover, if you have a particular interest in interviewing a personality, email the editor at editor@thestudentjournals.co.uk with the relevant details (some information about yourself, your interest for interviewing the figure, the type of questions you would like to ask and either the direct contact details for the person or the details of the press office/agency.
If you have experience in reporting on music, theatre or film and wish to attend a premiere, film festival or showing of a play, email our culture editor, Dean Taylor, at culture@thestudentjournals.co.uk with details of your background, any related articles you have written and also the details of the location it is being held (eg. National Theatre) and we will attempt to give you access to a showing so that you can review it.
If you wish to review a book, please also send an email to Dean.
If you're interested in joining the team, have a look at our Opportunities page.
5. Can I write about anything?
Yes. You can voice your opinion on any matter, whether they be social, economic, political, educational or even sport and culture related. The site is here to be provide opinion on a multifarious number of issues.
6. Anything else I need to know?
Only one more thing. As our third aim is to developing the talent of students, the website is asking for students to write mainly comment articles. Before you submit an article, make sure you have a look at the guidelines for writing articles to write the most effective article.
7. So no factual articles?
We allow, and ask for, factual articles on the condition that the issue written about is one that affects all students. This is because we feel that students are more aware of how new changes will affect them.
8. I've heard that you've started accepting pitches from non-UK university students. Is this true?
Indeed. On our one-year anniversary, we launched TSJ Global, which brings together students and recent graduates from around the world to write about issues that affect them.
9. I think you're doing a great job and I want to sponsor your site or advertise. How do I do this?
Fantastic - all the information is on the advertising and sponsorship page of our site.
10. I'm part of a student society and think that you'd like to sponsor us.
Are you sure we'd want to sponsor you?
Yes, that's why I asked didn't I?
Alright, well we're not in a financial position to be able to sponsor events but if you take a look at the advertising and sponsorship page of our site, you'll see that there is the possibility of us being the media partner for your event.
